Household Hero: From Crisis to Stability
After being connected with the resources she desperately needed, Gia (name changed to protect anonymity) was finally able to escape the cycle of housing instability.
When Gia was connected to Home for Families back in 2020, she and her four children were on their third shelter stay at YMCA’s Van Buren shelter.
Though she had received housing assistance before, credit history and ongoing chronic health issues made staying housed challenging. This time around, Gia’s case manager was able to connect her with a Family Unification Program voucher, which provided an easier pathway to affordable housing options.
HFF helped Gia transition from shelter into stable housing by paying off old utility bill balances and setting up a utility payment plan, assisting with her security deposit, and providing furniture to help her family's new space feel like home. Gia and her family also received food from our resource pantry, bus passes, and holiday assistance, to help preserve vital financial resources.
Since exiting shelter, Gia’s health has improved, and she is receiving regular care from health providers. Gia's children are also enrolled in a school that is within walking distance from their home, which allows them to attend school more regularly. Thanks to her own determination and timely supports, Gia and her family now have the stability and foundation they need to thrive.

We know that Tatum is a star, but we recently had the opportunity to share her story with the broader community thanks to an appearance on Good Day Columbus with Canine Companions. Where will Tatum turn up next? We are so grateful for our partnership with Canine Companions, who expertly trained Tatum for her role and provided her to us free of charge.
